We love a spot of packaging design at Tonik, and once again we thought we’d treat the world-wide-web and our loyal readers to another unchosen concept. Unfortunately this design didn’t quite make it into the real world, but we felt it was too good not to miss…
(Our previous ‘Other Concept’ journal piece for The Kind Living Salon explained how and why we tackle two concepts.. if you missed that or want to read it again then please click here!)
Our focus with this project was to create a distinct look for a new preserve brand called Cham. (like Jam but not quite) This product is a newbie to the preserve shelf… a super special blend of chia seeds, syrup and fresh fruit! It really does taste delicious, and we really wanted to get this across. Chia seeds are big news right now and so this product really lets them do their ‘thing’ in a whole new way!
We wanted to put the Mexican heritage of chia seeds (they’re native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala, just in case you didn’t know) into the visual story of the packaging; so we used a tiled pattern to evoke the a feeling of time and place.. as well as taste! The combination of bright, vibrant colours with a contemporary (yet traditional) tile pattern provides a subtle background to the brand – although only minimally used on pack it can be seen on secondary items singing loud and proud; an alternative way of saying bold, exotic flavour. We can almost imagine the interior for the local Cham cafe too! (Can I also have these tiles in my house please?)
A printed grid style label provides an authentic feel for the packaging but we still needed it to look super fresh, fruity and fun. A copper foiled logo sits perfectly with the copper lid and sticker to give that fine finishing touch.
We’ve also used a mixture of hand written typefaces, stamps and a serrated edge to create a fresh-from-the Mexican kitchen feel with a premium twist.
The chosen concept is on it’s way to shelves soon, we’re just making the final tweaks ready for the world to see. Come back to our portfolio and check out our instagram to see the finished product and keep up to date! We can’t wait!
We only send emails once a month and only ever about good things.
